Ridgewood, Queens, has over 800 empty tree beds – roughly one for every 90 residents. The Fallow Frames Biennial is an art festival on July 13 and 14 in Ridgewood. Twenty-five artists will stage site-specific works in 24 empty tree beds. Using an online and printed map, visitors are invited to wander the neighborhood and experience a range of artworks, including landscaping, sculpture, installations, and performances.

Curated by Alexa Hoyer and Alexander Zev, the festival celebrates often-overlooked urban spaces and uses ephemeral public artworks to spark conversations about urban ecology and community renewal. Its name, “Fallow Frames,” encourages us to see New York City’s empty tree beds as ready-made sidewalk canvases.

The inspiration for the festival started with Alexa Hoyer’s Fallow Frames photo archive project, which highlighted empty tree beds in Ridgewood and earned her a NYFA QAF Grant in 2023. Her project caught the attention of Urban Omnibus and Hyperallergic, leading to a group exhibition at PS122 Gallery. Inspired by the positive response, Alexa joined forces with artist Alexander Zev to expand the project into a biennial tree bed festival.

The festival has received instrumental support from the Flushing Town Hall Queens Community Arts Grant and worked in collaboration with Union Docs (where there will be an exhibition of Alexa Hoyer’s photo series from July 3-14), Ice Cream Window, Woodbine, the Stone Circle Theatre, among other local community partners.
